AFRICAN FASHION: House of VLISCO “FlowerBomb” – AtelierVlisco colab with Viktor&Rolf SS15 Collection

Words cannot explain my joy to see this collection! First showed during Paris Fashion Week in January this year I just have to bring back to your attention the SS15 collection where AtelierVlisco collaborated with British design duo Viktor&Rolf. It is like music to the eyes!

ATELIERVLISCO is an experimental platform for unique fashion design expressions, dedicated to the transition of the Vlisco heritage and crafts into luxury fashion styles. ATELIERVLISCO is exploring the limits of these iconic Vlisco fabrics and prints.

In this collection the traditional wax print has been stripped away to its bare black stroke lines as per a child’s colouring book, then built up again to expose the colourful print colours that it is so known for, and then this is literally built up 3D style. It brings a new concept to 3D textile technology to me :)

The amazing designers of Viktor&Rolf have brought back the craftiness of textile and really being expressive with the prints of Vlisco by having each flower meticulously cut out (laser cutting i’m presuming) and in an origami-esque fashion creating a sculpture of flowers to give Kew Gardens a run for its money! refers to this as a “Flowerbomb” and shares that “before the show even began, three dresses had been purchased by the art collector and patron Han Nefkens, who will donate them to Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.”

Previous collections from ATELIERVLISCO includes collaborations with Dent de Man, Woolrich, Eastpak and this one highlights once more “the core of ATELIERVLISCO reflects the Vlisco DNA of craftsmanship, its use of expressive colour and outspoken style”. As they explain “Each design is inspired by the stories found in Vlisco’s vast textile archives, which catalogue the company’s heritage and its respect for the authentic art and craft of textile design and fashion.”

As the designers say “I put my heart and soul in my work and have lost my mind in the process” – quoting VINCENT VAN GOGH. This case is a definite example of going out of ones mind to create a work of art.

Have a look for yourselves to remind you of this colab of creativity, print and soul.
